Amani Tom Matabaro

Executive & Founding Director - Congo Peace School

I was born, raised and educated in the South Kivu Province in the Democratic Republic of Congo. And  like millions of others, I’m also a victim of the nation’s violence as both of my parents were killed in the late 1990s during the many waves of fighting in the Congo.

I’ve worked as an educator, Program Manager, Country Consultant Representative, Field Research Consultant and interpreter for numerous international organizations including Johns Hopkins University, Boston University, The University of Washington (Seattle), the United Nations Multi-National Force in the Congo (MONUSCO), the International Rescue Committee, the Enough Project, Jewish World Watch, Women for Women International, The People Portfolio, Eastern Congo Initiative, the U.S. Holocaust Memorial and Museum and with Yahoo News’ war reporting project, Kevin Sites in the Hot Zone.

I have worked on multiple community based projects in the Congo with a focus on the education of children affected by war, women’s empowerment, positive youth engagement, resilience capacity building  and clean water for underserved communities. I currently lead the Congo Peace School
https://www.actionkivu.org/peace-school/ and I’m also working on a project to get children out of mines and ensure that they go to school. Learn more about our work at www.actionkivu.org
